The Otter Trail

The Otter Trail: South Africa’s Ultimate Garden Route Hiking Adventure

Five days. 42 kilometres. Ancient indigenous forest, dramatic cliffs, pristine rivers, secluded beaches and the wild Indian Ocean as your constant companion. Welcome to the legendary Otter Trail.

If hiking the Otter Trail in South Africa is on your bucket list, there is no better excuse to turn your adventure into an unforgettable Garden Route holiday.

Located within the spectacular Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park, the Otter Trail is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most iconic multi-day hiking trails and definitely a top hiking trail in the Garden Route!

And while the trail itself may last five days, your Garden Route adventure certainly doesn’t have to!

At Hello Garden Route, our locally based travel experts can help you arrange Garden Route holiday accommodation before and after your hike, as well as tours, activities, transfers, car rental and a tailor-made Garden Route itinerary – allowing you to make the most of your time in this extraordinary part of South Africa.

What is the Otter Trail?

The famous Otter Trail follows approximately 42 kilometres of spectacular Tsitsikamma coastline, beginning at Storms River Mouth Rest Camp and finishing at Nature’s Valley.

The hike takes 5 days and 4 nights, taking hikers through indigenous forest and fynbos, along rocky beaches and coastal cliffs and across beautiful rivers as the trail follows one of South Africa’s most unspoilt stretches of coastline.

It is challenging, wild and wonderfully rewarding.

With the Indian Ocean crashing against the rocks below, waterfalls tumbling towards the sea and kilometres of pristine coastal wilderness surrounding you, the Otter Trail offers the kind of experience that stays with you long after your hiking boots have been packed away.

Where Should You Stay Before the Otter Trail?

We strongly recommend arriving in Tsitsikamma at least one night before starting the Otter Trail.

Not only does this remove the stress of travelling a long distance on the morning your hike begins, but it gives you time to relax, organise your backpack, check your equipment and enjoy one of the most beautiful areas of the Garden Route.

Storms River Village and the surrounding Tsitsikamma area offer an excellent selection of accommodation, from comfortable hotels and guest houses to romantic lodges, forest retreats and self-catering accommodation.

Browse our hand-picked Tsitsikamma accommodation and let Hello Garden Route help you find the perfect stay before your hike.

You can also discover more about the area in our Tsitsikamma destination guide.

Give Yourself Time to Discover Tsitsikamma

If you have travelled all the way to hike the Otter Trail, don’t rush away from Tsitsikamma!

Known as the “Garden of the Garden Route,” this magnificent region combines ancient indigenous forests, mountains, deep river gorges and a dramatic coastline.

There is plenty to experience before or after your hike.

Adventure lovers can add activities such as a Tsitsikamma Treetop Canopy Tour, kayaking and lilo adventure, blackwater tubing, mountain biking, horse riding, ziplining or the famous Bloukrans Bridge bungee and skywalk experience to their itinerary.

Or, after five days of hiking, you might prefer a considerably slower pace – a beautiful lodge, comfortable bed, hot shower, delicious meal and a glass of South African wine!

Where to Stay After the Otter Trail

You did it!

After completing 42 kilometres of one of South Africa’s most celebrated hiking trails, you deserve a little luxury.

The Otter Trail finishes in beautiful Nature’s Valley, putting you in an ideal position to continue westwards through the Garden Route.

Nearby Plettenberg Bay makes an excellent first stop. Think beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants, nature reserves, ocean adventures and wonderful accommodation.

From Plett, continue towards Knysna, famous for its lagoon, forests, Knysna Heads, waterfront and superb restaurants.

Travel further west and you’ll reach Sedgefield and Wilderness, where lakes, rivers, beaches and forest-covered mountains provide the perfect setting for a few peaceful days of recovery.

Continue to George and Mossel Bay, or head inland over the Outeniqua Mountains towards Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo.

Instead of simply flying in, hiking the Otter Trail and flying home, turn your trip into a proper South African adventure.

Turn Your Otter Trail Hike into a Garden Route Holiday

One of the wonderful things about hiking the Otter Trail is its location.

You’re already in the heart of one of South Africa’s most celebrated holiday regions.

Why not add 3, 5 or even 7 nights before or after your hike and experience more of the Garden Route?

A post-Otter itinerary could look something like:

Nature’s Valley → Plettenberg Bay → Knysna → Sedgefield → Wilderness → George

Or allow us to create something completely personalised around your available time, interests and budget.

Browse our selection of Garden Route accommodation and start imagining where those hiking boots could take you next.
