It’s time to start looking forward to and get excited for ‘The best 10 days of Winter’ at the upcoming Knysna Oyster Festival!
Visitors & participants can expect an unforgettable festival this year which will take place from Friday, 9 – Sunday, 18 July 2021. This year’s festival theme is “Stay, Work, Play” which is rather appropriate considering how things have changed in the last year. You too can join the #WFK (Work from Knysna) movement.
From its humble beginnings as a local event held on a sports field, the Knysna Oyster Festival has grown into a community-wide celebration that draws visitors from all over the world and people from all walks of life who come together to indulge in the many delights that Knysna has to offer. If food is your dream, then come hungry because Knysna – affectionately known as the oyster capital of South Africa – offers a wide variety of wild and cultivated oysters served in various ways. Furthermore, it’s no coincidence that the festival takes place over Winter as oysters taste sweeter during the colder months.
Over the course of these 10 days, the festival will offer a wide variety of events and activities, making this event fun for the entire family. If oysters are not your thing, there are many family-friendly restaurants and coffee shops open for business along with picnic baskets to order, if you’re heading out and exploring. Enjoy some Garden Route Wine Tasting to compliment your oysters, take a walk along Top Hiking Trails in the Garden Route, alternatively through the Art Route/Gallery and Studio Meander Tours that will be made available daily. For those interested in something more energetic, there are several sporting events taking place including trail runs, the canoe challenge and of course the Knysna Cycle Tour that will kick off the 10 day festival on Friday, 9 July. You can also simply relax, soak up the spectacular views that Knysna has to offer and enjoy live music at this event.
Nearby attractions include the Knysna Elephant Park where you enjoy an elephant ride, fly high at the Knysna Ziplines, interact with locals on a Garden Route Township Tour or head over to the Ocean Odyssey Whale and Eco Tours to spend the day dolphin & whale watching!
COVID safety precautions will be the number one priority to ensure the safety of all. Safety measures will include mandatory mask wearing, social distancing, regular sanitizing of both hands and spaces, access control and safety monitors.
With South Africa shaking off the COVID slump and with global travel still largely off limits, the Knysna Oyster Festival is the perfect opportunity for locals to feed their wanderlust and enjoy the very best that Knysna has to offer. For those unable to attend the festival in person, the organisers have created a hybrid festival for 2021 with a combination of in-person and virtual events (including the In-Knysna Forest Virtual Run) that will ensure a good time can be had by all no matter where you find yourself.
