Keurbooms River Stand Up Paddle Boarding

A holiday spent in the Garden Route is by far the perfect excuse to enjoy something you’ve never done before so let your hair down and make this time away something to always remember…

The new adventure of stand-up paddling at the profoundly beautiful Keurbooms River in Plettenberg Bay will allow you to become one with nature and the river that lies ahead of you.

Stand-up paddling (also referred to as SUP) is perfect for those looking to do something different and fun without the dreaded “extreme sport factor” getting in the way. Stand-up paddling originated in Hawaii and is still a relatively new sport, quickly gaining momentum in popularity among water sport enthusiasts all over South Africa. This sport involves standing on a long board and using a paddle to propel through the water, which is a great way to appreciate the enchanting and tranquil beauty of Keurbooms River. Located just a short drive outside of Plettenberg Bay, Keurbooms River passes through the unspoilt Heritage site of the Keurbooms River Nature Reserve and is flowing with water that’s making its way from the Tsitsikamma Mountains to the vast Indian Ocean.

It is easy to get into stand-up paddling and children are also welcome. Before embarking on these stand-up paddling excursions, safety briefings and tuition will prepare everyone for what lies ahead. The adventure will start with a boat ride of about 4.5 km’s up to Whiskey Creek, at which point a guide will lead you out for a full hour of stand-up paddling to be enjoyed amidst the surrounding natural splendour.

There are a variety of indigenous trees around this stunning reserve to appreciate during your outing, from the majestic Outeniqua Yellowwoods to the Cape Beech – if you look closely, you may even see monkeys playing in the treetops. This well loved Garden Route nature reserve is also rich in bird life, with species that include the Knysna loerie, Knysna woodpecker, giant kingfisher, sunbird and yellow-billed ducks.

It is no secret that the Garden Route is a holiday destination filled with excitement and alluring attractions for all ages. Adventure seekers have been flocking to this beautiful and diverse region for decades and even couples, families and friends find themselves enjoying new activities whilst exploring all that the Garden Route has to offer.
