The Wilderness Picnic Co

On the banks of one of its many lakes or lagoons, on its golden beaches, in its spectacular mountains or in its lush and verdant forests, the Garden Route offers many a magical spot for a perfect picnic. The Wilderness Picnic Company brings picnic to your doorstep.

Paul and Rikke, the couple behind The Wilderness Picnic Company, met in just such a magical spot high in the Amathole Mountains. Both of them worked in the picturesque little town of Hogsback, Paul as a lodge manager and Rikke as an essential oil therapist. Paul has been working in the hospitality industry since he was sixteen so it is no small wonder that he moved to Wilderness as a restaurant manager. Deciding it is time for a change, he started producing gourmet sausages. A very niche market product, they soon realized they need to look at other opportunities and broaden their horizons. After many months of preparation and planning they started serving their first picnics about a year ago.

With a commitment to quality and the environment, The Wilderness Picnic Company has quickly distinguished themselves and their green picnics have become a sought after product in the Garden Route. Paul is a passionate foodie and chef and the delectable goodies found in their picnic boxes are mostly his handy work; while Rikke brings her European flair to the table. Paul and Rikke keep the picnics fresh, local and seasonal and they source their ingredients, bread and cheeses from suppliers in the area.

The Wilderness Picnic Company can cater picnics for 2 to 80 picnics per day. With a range of picnics available, including a kiddie’s picnic, a light lunch picnic and a deluxe basket, they offer a picnic for every and any event. They have recently also added an activities picnic – a picnic that travels well and is an ideal option for hiking, mountain bike adventures or horseback safaris.

Their picnics have been served at weddings, concerts as well as film- and television sets. Paul loves to experiment in the kitchen and will adapt his menu to vegetarian and vegan clients, honeymoon couples and surprise picnics for the spontaneous and adventurous.

With their unwavering commitment toward the environment, much time and effort have been invested into sourcing products for their picnics. All their baskets contain biodegradable plates and cutlery and are delivered in a disposable picnic basket. With materials like bagasse, a sugar cane product, and bioplastic Paul says that 95% of the materials used in the bags are recovered and re-used while all of the materials are biodegradable and recyclable.

Picnics can be ordered on their website and should be done the day before for lunch or before 10am for a late afternoon or evening picnic – perfect for those gorgeous late Garden Route sunsets. The activities picnic can be ordered with at least 2 hours’ notice.

Gift vouchers are available and are a perfect gift option. Currently The Wilderness Picnic Company delivers to Guesthouses, Hotels, Lodges and B&Bs in Wilderness.
