The Magic that is AfriCamps Klein Karoo
Having recently booked AfriCamps Klein Karoo for clients of ours, we were graciously offered a complimentary night’s stay to experience the magic of this property ourselves. With my brother-in-law and his wife visiting from the UK and not having seen them in over 4 years, time away together was the best excuse for a midweek getaway to the majestic Klein Karoo!
We are constantly on the lookout for new and unique properties to add to our portfolio, with pet-friendly always being on the top of our radar, considering our precious 16 year old fur baby by our side. Not only is Africamps Klein Karoo family friendly, they are pet-friendly too, which instantly gives it our 5* rating!
And so the 5 of us set off on a roadtrip from our home near Wilderness, over the scenic Outeniqua Pass and into the vast Klein Karoo…with lots of excitement of what lay ahead. A mere hour later, upon arrival, we were more than pleasantly surprised.
Africamps Klein Karoo is well marked and easy to find just outside of Oudtshoorn, along the Cango Caves road, less than a 10 minutes from town center. From the gate, you follow a dirt road (accessible by all cars, just take it slow) up the hillside and upon turning the corner, you are greeted by various tents, some of which are perched lower on the banks of the dam whilst others are positioned higher up, dotted along the hillside. All tents offer breathtaking, panoramic views over the arid landscape that is the Klein Karoo.
We were super blessed to be accommodated in Tent #9 which is perched higher up and offers of the best views, situated on the far right corner of the property with unobstructed views over the Swartberg mountain range with the dam below. It was PERFECT!
NOTE: If you are travelling with your pets (they only allow 1 pet per tent, upon prior request only), we’d suggest the tents higher up as the BBQ/Braai is built-in on the deck vs the tents which are on the edge of the dam where the BBQ/Braai is a fire pit a few meters away. Furthermore, there is no gate on the decks meaning your pets could easily go wander around, and with some amazing wild animals onsite, I just felt it safer to be nearer to my doggie whilst having a braai and socializing, after dark.
The tents are spacious, clean and very neat. There is a fully equipped kitchenette with all the basics for a most comfortable self-catering stay including a bar fridge, microwave and gas stove top. Every tent offers aircon, electric blankets and a wood-burning indoor fireplace, making it a year-around destination. During the Winter months, cozy up next to the fireplace with views of snowcapped Swartberg mountains in the distance; during the Summer months, keep cool with the assistance of the aircon and dips in the swimming pools nearby.
The communal area comprises of 2 swimming pools (one dedicated to small children, being shallow), various outdoor seating arrangements plus sunloungers as well as the reception from where you can purchase both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, snacks, book safari drives and various other on-site activities. There is also a built-in BBQ/Braai area and lovely children’s jungle gym to keep the little ones busy & happy. The two dams onsite do allow for catch&release fishing, rods are available at reception as well.
After doing our self check-in, we walked over to the communal area to introduce ourselves to JJ, the manager, and his assistant, Arnold. We received such a warm and friendly welcome which instantly made us feel part of the Africamps Klein Karoo family. Arnold even brought us a complimentary bag of wood and bottle of Rose, with a bright and beautiful smile. It’s the small things that really do count!
We soon lit the fire on our deck, opened the bottle of Rose and enjoyed the spectacular sunset from our unique vantage point. As the night sky darkened, it was soon brightened by the millions of stars that shine only as they so clearly do in the Klein Karoo followed the full moon which rose over the opposite hillside to which the sun a few moments ago set, shedding a light so bright that the entire AfriCamps became illuminated. We all shared an AH-HA moment, taking in the beauty that surrounded us.
After a delectable dinner / braai under the African sky, which of course included succulent Karoo lamb tjops (chops) and wors (sausage) that our husbands so perfectly prepared, and a social around the open fire, we crawled into bed and fell asleep to the sound of animal callings in the wild. Oh joy, of bliss…this is Africa, this is Africamps and THIS IS LIFE!
NOTE: They offer fantastic BBQ/Braai packs as well as Breakfast packs, delivered to your tent, for self-service. We opted to do a small shop before our arrival, as we were only spending the night. In hindsight, it would have been more convenient to just order the packs on-site, a note for our next trip (because there WILL be a next trip!).
