The Flying Club

The Flying Club might be the ‘new kid on the block’ as far as Garden Route adventure activities go by, however, they have already made a name for themselves with a great success rate in impressing both international and local visitors who are here to discover the mesmerizing destination of the Garden Route – there is no better way to see the Garden Route than from above.

To observe the beauty of the vast Indian Ocean, the Lakes District, majestic Outeniqua Mountain range and south-eastern coastline from a bird’s eye view, whilst embarking on an adventure in the African skies, is no doubt an uplifting experience, no pun intended!

While South Africa’s gorgeous Garden Route coastal village of Wilderness is known for its expansive beachfront, captivating hiking trails and idyllic whale-watching vantage points, The Flying Club rules the skies and captures the magic of this world-class destination in an unique way. So much heart and soul has gone into establishing The Flying Club, a local aviation club, where founder, chief pilot and safety officer David Daniel has bought to life his two greatest passions, shared between flying and delighting everyday “earthbound people through the wonders of aviation”. Stemming from his past 20 years+ as owner and operator of a flight training school on Kwa-Zulu Natal’s North Coast, David’s unbridled and ever growing passion for microlight flying led him to move to Wilderness, also known as South Africa’s mecca of free flying activities.

As an attraction that is among the flying activities fast making a comeback to the Garden Route, microlight flying allows travellers to admire the exquisite landscapes and abundant natural assets that form part of one of the most beautiful coastal destinations in the world. There are various flight options available through The Flying Club, in order to suit diverse budgets and time frames. Popular 25 minute flights take off from either the Wilderness or Knysna Airfields and journey over the grass covered plateau to the striking coastline and even over the famous Knysna Heads in the town of Knysna – flying over the shoreline at lower levels is considered a highlight during these sensational flights. Exploring Wilderness Village and its surrounding areas has never been more exciting!

Custom Garden Route Experience Options can be designed according to your budget and availability. Enjoy dazzling vistas of the coastline from Knysna Heads all the way past Sedgefield to Dolphin’s Point lookout in Wilderness, scattered lagoons and scenic fields, as you cross paths with mountain tops and become one with the seemingly endless beauty of the Garden Route. During the flight, you will be amazed as you appreciate the ever changing beauty that lies below you, while you take videos and photos of the ever changing views. A mobile phone or camera/standard video camera is permitted during the flight (although this needs to be disclosed before the flight departs as to securely attach it).

Flight options can be booked for varied durations of up to 3 hours long and can encompass the most breathtaking settings within the Garden Route. Customized Safari Flights can also be booked through The Flying Club across multiple days – with creative and open minded pilots who will go the extra mile to accommodate, your requests are welcomed.

The Flying Club operates an Air Creation Tanarg Microlight and a Magni Gyrocopter, to ensure the ultimate sky bound adventures to all. These microlight flights average about 100kmph and The Flying Club provides specialty goggles and headsets to its passengers. The headsets provided make it easy for passengers and pilots to converse during the flight.

Two dedicated, licensed and experienced pilots lead all flights and ensure the safety and well-being of passengers of The Flying Club…

David Daniel spent his formative years dreaming of a future as a pilot, which led him to spend the later part of his high school days flying sailplanes and gliders until he followed a PPL from Cessna Flight Centre in Rand Airport in 1981. He passed Hang Gliding School ”with flying colours” and, building on the experience gained in over 7000 hours of flying, started The Flying Club in Wilderness where locals and tourists are now able to experience the magic of microlight flights for themselves.

Nigel “Zulu” Dowsett grew up around bush planes and went on to make a living working as a pilot and then an A Grade instructor. His skills in hang gliding and gyrocopter flying opened doors in his pursuit for wildlife protection as a conservation bush pilot in Northern Zululand. Nigel was also selected to fly as aircrew on air/sea rescues and flew the annual Sardine Run, along the KZN and Transkei coast, for 11 years for National Geographic Wild.

Offering microlight and gyrocopter flights with airfields in both Knysna and Wilderness, The Flying Club redefines the meaning of the sky’s the limit!
