Spoilt @ Kanonkop House

My partner and I recently got spoilt with an overnight stay at the uber lovely Kanonkop House in Knysna.

Perched high up on the hillside, boasting sprawling views over Knysna Lagoon towards the world-famous Heads, this 5 Star Rated Guest House is an absolute treat for anyone seeking the best of the best. From outstanding service to gourmet breakfast (their home-made muesli is a winner!) to one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever had the privilege of resting in…Kanonkop offers it all, and more!

Family owned and managed, expect a personal touch throughout. Magnificent art work and collector’s items fill the spaces; the décor is sophisticated elegance with a modern twist. Although juze, the homely ambience and tranquil setting is what attracts all their repeat & referral guests. After just one night’s stay, it’s easy to see why.

Upon our arrival the afternoon, Samantha Conyers (the daughter, who also manages their Villa Rental division) greeted us with a warm welcome, showed us to our sprawling ‘Sunbird Suite’ where-after we gathered around the bar area to enjoy complimentary drinks and social. Other guests started to arrive, most of which had already checked in, returning after their day of golf at one of the nearby Estates. Simola is literally just up the road; Pezula is an easy 10 minute drive. It was wonderful to see how Sam and her guests interacted, with effortless ease. This is the type of #serviceexcellance that we aim for all our travellers to receive and reminded me of why we love Kanonkop House so!

As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. Sam shared with us her top recommendations for dinner and kindly reserved a table at the restaurant of our choice: Cruise Café

A mere 5 minutes drive and we were in town, seated and ready to dine. A romantic, candlelit dinner was in order. With a variety of delectable cuisine to choose from, we took our time and savored a 3 course meal. In order (and respectively): Brocolli Soup of the Day, Chilli Poppers (the real deal!), Rump Steak, Fresh Calamari, ending off with two Dom P’s. Our bellies were full and we were ready to recline…

The following morning, we awoke to one of the most desirable views in the Garden Route, possibly the world! After enjoying a cup of coffee on our private balcony, soaking it all in, we joined their legendary homemade breakfast feast. Mark Conyers (the son & brother to Sam) was on duty that morning, another warm welcome, again offering exceptional service until the second we left.

A nice and rather unusual touch is seating guests (2 or 3 couples, alike) together at one table, allowing for interesting conversations and possibly even new friendships. In no time, talks with our Swiss neighbors covered topics such as tales about our countries, travels, careers and just how much we were enjoying our stay at Kanonkop House, not wanting to leave!

But alas, we had to head back into reality. We were grateful for the opportunity to experience this extraordinary Guest House first hand, and the memories that came along with it.

Quick Facts:

Kanonkop House has 7 Suites in total, ensuring an intimate stay: 2 Premium Garden Rooms, facing the sparkling swimming pool and sundeck; 3 Luxury Lagoon View Rooms as well as a Standard Luxury Room and Penthouse Suite all in the main house. Regret, no children under 10 years of age but that being said, it enhances that ‘luxurious retreat’ experience with nothing but the sounds birds tweeting in their lush indigenous forest.

The aforementioned shelters the property from any traffic disturbances below, also protects from prying eyes.

The Conyers are a delightful family and their staff are just as wonderful. Kanonkop House has won many prestigious awards (including Trip Advisor Winner 2013: Top 25 Luxury Small Hotels in Africa) but they aren’t the type to boast. Elegant, immaculate, outstanding and unsurpassed are just a few adjectives describing this boutique Knysna Holiday Accommodation.
