In the heart of the Garden Route is the picturesque town of Sedgefield. From the N2, driving through town on your way to Knysna or George, you may think this little town doesn’t have much to offer. This is a mistake you don’t want to make. Sedgefield is surrounded by the coastal lake system, the Indian Ocean and some of the highest and oldest fossil sand dunes in Africa. Buttressed from the temperamental Indian Ocean by its crown of golden dunes, you can easily understand that the Garden Route, and particularly Sedgefield, is such a popular destination. After all, it is considered to have the 2nd most moderate climate in the world after Hawaii.
The beauty and wonder of the town does not end there. Sedgefield is also the first town in Africa that has been rewarded slow town status by the Cittaslow movement. Started in 1999, with a dedication to a better quality of life through a different way of living, the Cittaslow network now includes towns in 30 countries all over the world.
The Sedgefield Slow Festival could therefore not be more aptly named. Since its inception in 2000 the festival has excelled in involving the local community, showcasing the town and its natural splendour, and promoting slow living by having “Fun! The way it used to be…”
Events are held at various locations in and around Sedgefield. In the centre of town is the Village Green. Forming the hub of the festival, with various food and craft stalls, the Mitchell’s Knysna Brewery beer garden, a craft tent for the youngsters, Boeresport, a dog agility show and a jam packed program for the entertainment tent, the Village Green will provide hours of enjoyment to festival goers.
The festival will satisfy any outdoor enthusiast! The Goukamma Nature Reserve is the starting point of the Goukamma Traverse, a truly unique and spectacular trail run. Swartvlei lagoon hosts both the Anything that Floats (where teams build and race in crafts made from anything that floats), an event that is both a major attraction and a crowd pleaser, and the Slow Fest Fun SUP Race, a stand up paddling event.
On Sunday Myoli Beach, one of Sedgefield’s 5 spectacular beaches, is the venue for both the Sand Sculpting Challenge and the Easter Bunny Beach Dash, while the Amazing Creatures and Band Street Parade, the culmination of the festival, winds its way through the streets of Sedgefield to the Village Green.
The old Sedgefield station is a nostalgic reminder of the days when the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe still puffed its way through town and is the perfect venue for the Drive In. This year the Drive In also offers the opportunity to bring a picnic blanket and portable radio for a ‘Movies in the Park’ experience.
Easter is not just about Easter eggs and chocolate bunnies. The churches in Sedgefield are hosting The Way of the Cross, an ecumenical Cristian pilgrimage meandering through town. On Sunday morning the Easter Sunday Sunrise Service is an opportunity for all Christians to celebrate the resurrection of Christ while a mass choir will be performing on the Village Green just after the parade.
The 2016 Sedgefield Slow Festival takes place from Thursday 24 March to Sunday 27 March. For the full program and entry fees to the different events, please visit the Sedgefield Slow Festival website.
