Plettenberg Bay is world-renowned for its amazing summer atmosphere, attracting both international and South African travellers, but things are heating up this winter. Forget about those winter blues – instead, focus on the Plett Ocean Festival taking place from 4 – 13 July 2025. It’s the fourth annual festival and it invites you to observe, conserve and preserve our beautiful ocean, right on Plett’s doorstep.
World Oceans Day, celebrated on the 8th of June every year, is a United Nations recognized day that promotes awareness about how important our oceans are for sustaining life on the planet and how crucial it is to protect and save them.
Both these events are directed towards creating awareness among the public about our ecosystem, with special focus on potential threats and instilling mass action in order to save the oceans.
Whereas World Oceans Day is a global call to action in early June, the Plett Ocean Festival carries the momentum over into July, offering additional opportunities for awareness and engagement.
The event features activities that include everything from beach cleanups to educational workshops that encourage people to take tangible steps towards protecting our ocean. You can enjoy a range of interesting activities, including rock pool searches, ocean art making and even sporting events. There will also be plenty of time to see and learn about our wonderful sea creatures up close, both above and below the water.
The Marine Science Symposium is the beating heart of the festival, where conservationists and scientists are given a platform to share knowledge and where informed community engagement is fostered. This year, the main subjects will be reports on the status of the Cape fur seal population and the rabies epidemic. You will also hear about shark research and how Plettenberg Bay contributes towards understanding these incredible animals.
With whales expected to be in the bay, their breaching, lobtailing and spy-hopping activities will take centre stage. The event will also highlight delicate seahorses, dolphins, birds, and beaches and how the Plett community strives to ensure that the ecosystem is preserved.
Whether you’re passionate about marine life or are just looking for a wonderful winter getaway, the Plett Ocean Festival is your opportunity to rediscover nature, learn something new and become a part of this growing conservation movement.
From exciting beach activities to informative science talks, there is something for everyone. Don’t miss out on this ocean celebration. Book your stay in Plettenberg Bay with Hello Garden Route today and make your holiday one to remember!
