I recently spoilt my family to a lazy Sunday Drive and mouthwatering, most satisfying 3-course luncheon at the picturesque Swartberg Country Manor in the heart of the Klein Karoo.
And what a treat it was!
Nestled on Voorbedacht farm in the Cango Valley at the foot of the world-renowned Swartberg Pass, both their 4* rated Guest House and fine-dining ‘Patat’ (meaning sweet potato in Afrikaans) Restaurant boasts breathtaking views of the majestic mountain range within a tranquil setting.
We were given a warm welcome by the resident host and chef, Tertius, who proceeded to show us around the sprawling estate. It was my first visit and upon inspection, knew I had to get them listed on our portfolio of distinctive properties. See https://www.hellogardenroute.co.za/listing/swartberg-country-manor/
After a walk around, our tummies were grumbling and ready to feast on! A tastefully decorated table was appointed to us in their communal dining hall (the weather was a tad overcast for the alternative outdoor deck setting). Soon, we commenced on starters…

@ R115 per person, it was unbeatable value-for-money. Even my thrifty grandfather exclaimed: “Without a doubt, I’ll be back!”
With exceptional service, outstanding quality of food and picturesque setting, it was well worth the visit. Next time we’ll be sure to stay over though! After savoring every last bite of dessert, all you want to do is retreat to your room for an afternoon nap…
Patat and HelloGardenRoute share an appreciation for organic produce. Being part of a working farm, Swartberg Country Manor makes use of fresh produce from their land and that of their thriving neighbors. Cheese is sourced from just down the road and all wines and ports from over the mountain.
As the saying goes: Local is Lekker!
Swartberg Country Manor is a leisurely 40 minute drive from Oudtshoorn with all its activities and attractions. Cango Caves is mere 20 minutes away. The charismatic yet quaint town of Calitzdorp, better known as ‘The port wine capital of South Africa’, is just over the Pass.
