Discover the Garden Route National Park, a birdwatcher’s paradise in South Africa, where rich biodiversity meets breathtaking natural beauty.
Birdwatching is more than just spotting species. It’s an invitation to slow down, tune into nature and discover a deeper sense of connection. When you’re looking for birds, your senses are heightened: you see and hear everything else more deeply. Birding is an activity that makes you feel more connected to the environment you’re surrounded by, and allows you to look deeper within yourself, tapping into your thoughts and emotions.
On South Africa’s scenic Garden Route, the National Park offers one of the best backdrops for birding, where diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity come together to create a paradise for bird lovers.
The Garden Route National Park lies along one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world – the South Coast of South Africa. This is a spectacular retreat for lovers of nature and those looking for peace, amidst breathtaking surroundings. It is also an exceptional spot for birding watching!
The park is renowned for its biodiversity and offers a mosaic of different habitats from fynbos and saltwater lakes to indigenous forests and rocky shorelines. This biodiversity makes it a haven for an abundance of different bird species, making the park a paradise for birdwatchers.
Some of the feathered friends you’ll meet here are the Cape Shoveler, Kittlitz’s Plover, Pied Avocet and Black-winged Stilt, which are all waterbirds. Other common birds are raptors like the African Fish Eagle and Osprey, also present along the rivers and lakes.
The Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park is quite popular among birders. The interconnected saltwater lakes of Rondevlei, Langvlei and Island Lake lead to the Touw Estuary, where the Touw River flows into the Indian Ocean. This area is part of an internationally recognised RAMSAR site, featuring bird hides at Rondevlei, Langvlei (Malachite Kingfisher hide) and along the Touw River (Gallinule hide).
Major concentrations of Great Crested Grebe can be found on Rondevlei and Langvlei, alongside other commonly seen birds like the Red-knobbed Coot and the Yellow-billed Duck. The nearby Swartvlei Estuary is ideal for observing wading birds and attracts Caspian Terns and Kelp Gulls in summer. The forested hillsides shelter various raptor species such as the Cuckoo Hawk and African Goshawks.
Even though Wilderness is most popular for birdwatching, Knysna is home to over 280 bird species, with notable water birds that can be found at Steenbok Park, Groenvlei and Swartvlei Lakes. The estuary of the Knysna River attracts waders like the Marsh Sandpiper and Whimbrel in the summer, while larger species like egrets are seen year-round. If you wish to visit the Tsitsikamma section at Storms River Camp, you will find birds like the African Black Oystercatcher and you can look for Cape and White-breasted cormorants.
No matter if you’re an avid birder or simply curious about exploring the great outdoors, the Garden Route National Park offers an experience that goes beyond the ordinary.
