One of the exciting activities you can do at Buffelsdrift is an an early morning Meerkat Safari Adventure where you’ll have the opportunity to witness these incredible wild habituated animals emerging from their burrows, just in time to soak up the sun before they head about their daily activities. Meerkat Safaris at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge will bring you up close to these small mammals that belongs to the mongoose family, known for their distinctive upright stance and social behavior. A trained ranger will meet guests in the Lookout Lounge, to enjoy a warm cup of coffee and rusks before embarking on the safari vehicle, heading off into the sunrise to the meerkat burrows. On the way to the burrows, guests are usually lucky to spot some of the 22 species of animals on the reserve. Considering animals like Buffalo and Hippo are local residents, te guests remain in the vehicle whilst waiting for the meerkats to emerge at the crack of dawn. The ranger educates guests on all the interesting facts and behaviour of meerkats throughout the experience.
Another highlighted activity that you can enjoy whilst visiting Buffeldrift Game Lodge is the Free-Roaming Cheetah Experience. In April 2020, the reserve introduced cheetahs and after two years of being on the reserve and becoming a part of their family, they are now well adapted and have relaxed in their new home environment. The aim of this activity is to create a platform in which to educate people about this predator in its natural environment, also to create conservation awareness through education and to give visitors a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Some fun facts about cheetahs include: A cheetah’s spots are as unique as human fingerprints – no two cheetahs have the same pattern; A cheetah’s heart, lungs, and nasal passages are all enlarged to support their high-speed running; Unlike other big cats, cheetahs cannot roar – instead, they make a variety of chirps, purrs, and high-pitched calls.
