Upon entering the gardens, you’ll immediately sense a shift into a most relaxing and peaceful haven. It’s home to a unique kind of flora that exists only in the Garden Route.
The Garden Route Botanical Garden is far from the noise of traffic and the hustle of the city. The only sounds you’ll hear is the refreshing singing of birds and the pattering of insects, with the soothing sound of water from various dams and streams. The garden is engulfed by indigenous trees, vibrant flower beds, fynbos and succulent plants. Small signboards inform visitors of plant names with interesting facts.
The Cape Kingdom is one of the richest and smallest floral kingdoms in the world. The Garden Route Botanical Garden plays a significant role in both the conservation and study of this critical floral kingdom. The gardens border mountain forests and the Outeniqua Nature Reserve.
This well-established botanical garden has a natural wetland. Don’t be surprised if you sit on a bench and spot a dragonfly or other gentle insects frolicking about. Bird’s nests, made from the bulrush leaves and stems, hang over the water’s edge. A wide diversity of birds, insects and small animals inhabit the sprawling 12-hectare area.
Wide Diversity
There are also several rare species endemic to the area. For those who enjoy long walks, be sure to walk towards the end of the garden, where dams and furrows can be found. If you’re planning a hike, put on your hiking shoes and walk along ancient mountain trails whilst taking in the sights of rarely-seen plants.
