Outeniqua Powervan

Experience the Outeniqua Powervan on either routes: George or Mossel Bay. Step onboard for an unforgettable railway journey through forests, waterfalls, up mountain passed or along the glorious coastline of the world famous Garden Route.

Are you planning a trip to the Garden Route and looking for a unique way to experience and explore your new surroundings? Why not take a trip with the Outeniqua Powervan?

The Outeniqua Powervan began in the early 2000’s by Nicol Marais as a project to keep himself busy in his early retirement. He acquired old Transnet service trolleys and negotiated an access agreement which allowed the Outeniqua Powervan to utilise the track between George and Oudtshoorn, also between George and Mossel Bay.

This unforgettably special experience takes you through diverse landscapes of the glorious Garden Route, past waterfalls and forests, sea and rivers, with an abundance of flora and fauna along the way. Enjoy a picnic stop ontop of the Outeniqua Mountain pass with unsurpassed views over the city of George, alternatively along the coastal route between Mossel Bay and Hartenbos.

The Powervan George – you’ll ride on one of the most picturesque railway passes in South Africa, a 2.5 hour journey. Outeniqua Transport Museum is the point of departure and arrival for the van and boasts an amazing collection of carriages and steam trains of yesteryear, also incredible vintage car collection. It’s a great way to kick off your journey, with a tour of this famed museum. The van stops at the top of the Outeniqua mountain pass, a place at which to enjoy your picnic (bring your own snacks!) surrounded by nature and endless views.

The Powervan Mossel Bay – previously known as the Diaz Express, Hartenbos is the starting point for this tour and will lead you to a variety of places in the highly popular Great Brak River, Glentana and Maalgate. You will have the chance to make a stop at several boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries including Opispoor Pub & Grill. Enjoy uninterrupted sea views and fantastic Garden Route whale watching opportunities.

The Powervan Mossel Bay offers a Breakfast & Lunch Excursion as well as a Picnic Excursion, with short trips between halts. The Breakfast & Lunch Excursion goes from Hartenbos to Glentana, and stops for breakfast/lunch Great Brak, Seeplaas or Opispoor Pub & Grill. The Picnic trip travels along the same route and stops at a picturesque picnic area along the way, for a 30 minute oppertunity to enjoy your own snacks with a scenic view.
