George Hops Festival

Only in its 2nd year, the George Hops Festival is still in its infant stages but don’t underestimate this new kid on the block for a moment.

Dreamed up by founders Frik Labuschagne and Gerald Paluzzi, the Hops Festival is a celebration of the harvest season. In line with harvest festivals all over the world, it also heralds in a time when the community can take a bit of a breather after all the hard work, come together for some entertainment, a bit of beer tasting and compete through various sports and activities.

Hops were first introduced to South Africa by Jan van Riebeeck in 1652 and today almost 90% of hops farming is done in the George area. No matter where you are in the country, when you open that beer bottle you are almost ensured to have a little piece of the Garden Route in your hands.

Festival goers will have the opportunity to sample some of SAB’s latest brews from SABMiller’s micro-brewery Newlands Spring Brewing Co. They will also be able to touch, smell and even taste the proudly South African hops that has been specially cultivated for our climate. Stilt harvesting will be on display and is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser.

The festival is distinguishing itself as a sports festival. With the Garden Route well known for being the adventure belt of South Africa, a truly unique blend of activities will be on offer. With a mountain bike relay, a trial run, the Hops Triathlon, the Hops Action Bowling finals at Let’s Go Bowling, a golf tournament at Kingswood Golf Estate, a Zumbathon as well as the Hops CrossFit Wings competition, there is definitely something for everyone.

The festival takes place at Mount View Resort in York Street. With its wide expanses of open green lawns, this is an ideal venue to entertain the whole family. Most sport events will start and finish next to the green and the mountain bike trail, meandering through the Katrivier wetlands, is visible from the terrace.

A variety of food stalls cater for every palate and while kids will be entertained by face painting, soft play, jumping castles and the Klikkerland entertainers who will perform at 14:00, parents can also rest assured that they can safely leave their kids at Kidz at Mountview’s indoor play area.

Activities will start at 08:00, include a Miss Hops Festival pageant for all ages, and will last right through the day with evening entertainment by Karen Ferreira, performing at 19:00, and Wicus van der Merwe at 20:00
