On the weekend of 13 to 15 May 2016, the first ever Wilderness Cheese and Wine Festival will take place on the grounds of the Wilderness Hotel.
The George Cheese Festival, a very popular event on the Garden Route events calendar, stood under the stewardship of the Outeniqua Primary School for 12 years but, with stricter legislation regarding schools and alcohol, the rights to the festival went up for sale in 2015.
The rights to the festival were bought by local business owner and tourism stake holder, Jacques Pratt. Wilderness is not known for its festivals and Jacques feel strongly that: “Wilderness needs a festival.”
This year the festival is known as the Wilderness Cheese and Wine Festival but he has great plans for the future of this festival and believes the festival has great potential to evolve into a festival quite unique to Wilderness that will showcase the town to its full glory.
The festival starts on Friday the 13th of May at 14:00 and will provide cheese, wine and entertainment till Sunday 16 May at 16:00.
The premises of the Wilderness Hotel already promise a distinctive change to the look and feel of the festival and, with Eden Baloons and Twinkle Tots being an integral part of the festival, it promises to be a feast for all the senses.
Wine cellars such as Van Loveren, Alvi’s Drift, Stellenrust, Oranjerivier Cellars and local Garden Route winery, Jakkalsvlei will provide something to please every nose and palate, while Kingwill cheeses, the local Oysters R Us, and a selection of other eateries will provide something more substantial.
Local musicians, including well-known artists like Steve Newman, Heather Waters, LeRoy and Sugar and Spice, will provide no less than 30 hours of music, covering a wide range of sounds from jazz to old-style rock n roll.
The festival times will be as follows:
Friday 13 May – 14:00 to 22:00
Saturday 14 May – 10:00 to 22:00
Sunday 15 May – 10:00 to 16:00
Tickets for the festival, as well as wine-tasting glasses, will be available at the entrance to the festival or tickets can be obtained online through Ticketstroom at www.bit.ly/ticketswine.
